Meet a Utah Therapist: Josh Otani, MFTI

About Josh

Josh was born and raised in San Jose, California and moved to Utah in 2016. In his free time, Josh enjoys playing volleyball, baking, and playing board games with his family and friends.

Education and Experience

Josh earned a bachelor’s degree in Psychology with a minor in Family Life from Brigham Young University. He is currently receiving his master’s degree at Utah State University and is an intern Marriage and Family Therapist.

In his undergraduate degree, Josh worked extensively with adolescents and teens with general mood disorders in a mental health setting. He was also a research assistant where he presented at the Mary Lou Fulton conference and received training to be a sexual mindfulness instructor.

Now in his master’s program, he is working as a teaching assistant for courses related to addictions, abuse, and trauma. He is carrying out a thesis project related to couple communication dynamics and problematic pornography use.

Therapeutic Philosophy and Approach

Josh works with individuals, couples, and families. Josh believes that everyone possesses the key to their own success, and much of the healing and growth that takes place in therapy occurs through gradual awareness and understanding of their situation.
